With many wins in OC, kayak, stand up paddling events, and most recently the 2010 Battle of the Paddle Hawaii in both the Elite and Downwind races, it’s an understatement to say that Danny Ching is only an accomplished paddler.
Produced by Riviera/Rambo Films, Mastering Stand Up Paddle Technique with Danny Ching is a two part instructional video aimed at the beginner/intermediate standup paddler. Danny’s humor filled personality works well as he presents the instructions in an easy to follow manner.
The first part of the film focuses on paddle stroke. Danny covers the basics of paddle grip in this section followed by a more detailed instruction on stroke technique. Valuable insight is provided on catch and recovery as well as an introduction to simple, but effective, “set drill” that is helpful in starting new paddlers off in the right direction. A brief description of balance and proper use of muscle groups during strokes is also discussed. Nearly the entire film is shot on the water using a variety of camera angles allowing the viewer to witness the proper execution of the strokes as Danny explains.
The second part of the film covers a broad range of tips and techniques pertaining to stand up paddle surfing. This section goes through a detailed explanation and demonstration of paddle and footing techniques that can be used in the surfer’s advantage it get through waves and white water. The film then goes into standard surf technique, such as turning your board to properly catch a wave as well as beneficial paddle technique while riding a wave.
Included on the bonus section of the DVD are short interviews with shapers Ron House, Gary McNabb, as well as 2010 Battle of the Paddle Hawaii clips.
Danny’s presentation of paddle surfing technique was done in great fashion; especially from the beginner and intermediate perspective. Danny’s instruction is well suited for beginning paddlers, recreational/novice paddlers that are looking to improve their paddling skill, and especially those moving into racing where technique is crucial.
